Francis Hewlett Archive (FCP2)

Francis Hewlett was a well-known artist and Head of Painting at Falmouth College of Art from 1960 until his retirement in 1981. Alongside his vast body of work of observational drawing and painting, including figures, still life, architecture and portraiture, Hewlett was also prolific sculptor making large, and often humourous, ceramic pieces based on the human anatomy and everyday objects.

The Collection includes a substantial series of detailed sketchbooks detailing Hewlett's work over seven decades, alongside photographs, records relating to exhibitions and newscuttings. The Collection also contains a significant body of correspondence between Hewlett and fellow artists, galleries and friends. This correspondence not only gives an insight to the life and work of Hewlett himself, but also his network of fellow artists in Cornwall and beyond.

The variety of subjects of Hewlett's work - from Y-fronts to Cathedrals - ensures that this Collection has a broad appeal and is of great relevance to those with an interest in drawing, painting or sculpture, or indeed the everyday working life of an artist in Cornwall in the Twentieth Century.
